For this week, I wanted to try my hands at creating a visual document, and not just one chart. I wanted to put together a single document that displayed a collection of charts, such that the individual document would tell a story. Think in a similar manner to what you see on dashboards, but with static images. Interactivity is sometimes overrated, given that you have to click around all over the place.
Before you do start, be sure to sketch out what you want. Just give you a rough idea of what you want your final output to look like. I am going for something that looks like the below.

Using Bard to Help with Coding

Who about 10 years ago created a series of about 15 vids on using D3. Some of the material is out of date, given the changes and improvements in the various iterations of D3 (at the time they made the video, D3 was on version 03, and we are not at version 07). However much of the explanations and rationale given for the way the language is written is pretty sound. Access the videos below.

Getting Started with D3js

D3 allows you to bind arbitrary data to a Document Object Model (DOM), and then apply data-driven transformations to the document. For example, you can use D3 to generate an HTML table from an array of numbers. Or, use the same data to create an interactive SVG bar chart with smooth transitions and interaction.

Using RevealJS

Some time ago, celebrity news broke that Leonardo DiCaprio and his much younger girlfriend, Camila Morrone, had broken up. America is having a cultural discussion about older men dating younger women. It is less a question about the legality of a man in his thirties or forties, as with DiCaprio, having a relationship with a woman in her very late teens or early twenties. It is more a question of the ethics of such a relationship. In the eyes of the law, an eighteen-year-old is undoubtedly eligible to participate fully in all aspects of society (enrolling in the military, voting, etc.). However, a man of DiCaprio’s stature, and given his wealth and fame, is likely to hold a certain sway over a much younger person, and collectively we are wondering if

Talking to a provider about HIV

After looking at where people are hearing about sex and birth control, I wanted to explore the issue of sexual health a bit more. This time, I was curious about HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The world is recovering from COVID, but the HIV pandemic has raged for the past three decades. And in developed countries like the US, the epidemic is somewhat under control. At least in a place like the US, medical advancements, access to basic health provisions, and the proliferation of healthcare organizations that provide care and outreach services have helped control the spread of the disease. However, the problem remains, and many researchers, myself included, have spent much time thinking of how best to deal with the new stage of the epidemic in the US, where we see new infections primarily within specific populations. At the same time, we grapple with the idea that the infection has become a chronic condition.

Talking to parents about sex and birth control

The sexual and reproductive health of Americans, young and old, remains an issue; looking at HIV and STI infection rates highlights the problem, not to mention the complexities of accessing birth control and critical reproductive health services. Furthermore, with a social and political system that appears hostile to notions of healthy sexual attitudes, human sexuality, and reproduction, we have some clarity as to why there is a problem.

Understanding the problem may require looking at whether people talk to their parents about sex and reproductive health. Parents and guardians tend to be significant sources of information regarding such social issues. And while the internet rules our lives, parents are likely not the first source and even not the most in-depth source of information. However, they do play an outsized role in forming our broader perspectives and reinforcing cultural norms. I assume the same applies to issues such as sexual health.

Palettes and Tables

Styling a table in markdown

Palmer Penguins dataset is meant to provide an alternative to the
iris
that is often used in Tidyverse to provide examples. You can fork the necessary data from the following: allisonhorst.github.io/palmerpenguins. Outside of some very broad definitions, the philosophies of some of the groups I know of from pop culture begin to feel slippery when scrutiny. Additionally, it would seem as though hate groups, particularly those that are open to the point of advocating for genocide and/or strict segregation, are things of the past. Not because the ideas no longer exist, but because they are unpopular positions, politically speaking. Therefore, groups that espouse these beliefs are often hidden. However, much brighter people spend time grappling with such issues defining belief systems, ideologies, and identifying groups.

Shaded Relief Maps

Recently, I have found myself playing with creating relief maps, which is another form of data visualization. I was on Etsy.com and saw some beautiful posters showing relief maps of some mountainous areas and wondered how they were created. So, I fired up my trusty Google machine and found some great tutorials. The tutorial I found uses QGIS to clip digital elevation model (DEM) of a specific area and then utilizes Blender, an open-source 3D software, to render 3D looking shaded-relief maps. It is a tedious process, and I have a much greater appreciation for animators’ work for film and television. One of the more challenging parts of this process has been applying color palettes to help the relief features stand out. Anyway, I think I have some hang of it after some trial and error, but I continue to practice. Below is a shaded relief of Ghana. In a nod to our recent birthday, I tried to use the colors in Ghana’s flag, Green, Gold, and Red. The Red represents the higher elevations, while the Green captures the lower areas, and finally, Gold/Yellow is the mid- (comparatively speaking) relief area.
